A town first settled by Europeans as part of the Pavonia, New Netherland colony in the 17th century, Hoboken has grown to become part of the New York metropolitan area. It is the site of the Hoboken Terminal, a central transportation hub serving residents with buses, trains, and shuttles. Over 60,000 people live in the city limits, making Hoboken one of the area’s growing cities with a lot to offer casual and serious visitors. The town was named originally by Colonel John Stevens when he bought land, using a phrase that roughly translated as “land of the tobacco pipe.”
Nicknamed the Mile Square City, Hoboken is actually larger than this but still maintains this urban density and feel that attracts people en masse. It has a beautiful waterfront as an archetypal port town, having an economy powered by this status as a port town. As an industrialized place that hosted the Lipton Tea and Maxwell House plants, it has been a center of hard-working people and serious enjoyers of the finer things in life. Many tours cross the waterways, allowing onlookers to enjoy the city’s sea life and maritime traditions. If you’re looking for food, Hoboken is known for its Italian and German cuisine.
Many stay in Hoboken while enjoying the rest of the New York metropolitan area, including the Manhattan Skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Whatever you’ve got going on, Hoboken has something to provide you!
