Sidewalks should be simple: a safe place to walk, smooth underfoot, and easy to navigate. But in one section of Morganville, NJ, the sidewalk had become anything but. Cracked concrete, uneven slabs, and poor drainage had turned a daily necessity into a safety concern — especially for elderly pedestrians or those using strollers or mobility devices.
That’s where we came in.
At
South Shore Paving, we specialize in solutions that go beyond the surface.
This project was about more than concrete — it was about restoring safety, meeting local codes, and bringing back curb appeal in one of Morganville’s busier suburban corridors.
What We Walked Into
The property owner — part of a mixed-use area that sees both residential foot traffic and access to local storefronts — had reached out with three goals in mind: improve safety, comply with regulations, and upgrade the sidewalk’s appearance. The existing concrete was deteriorating, water wasn’t draining properly, and the sidewalk wasn’t ADA-compliant.
Making matters more complicated, the stretch included several embedded utility access points and was positioned right along a busy street.
That meant we had to be precise not only in our formwork and slope grading but also in how we managed pedestrian and vehicle traffic during the job.
Safety wasn’t a nice-to-have.
It was critical throughout the entire process.
Behind the Scenes: Making It Work
Once the site was prepped and the failing concrete removed, we focused on the foundation — compacting the sub-base and carefully grading for proper slope. The goal was to guide water away from pedestrian areas without creating tripping hazards or pooling zones.
With every form set, we double-checked elevations to ensure compliance with ADA standards.
Working around existing utility covers required extra care.
Each one needed to remain accessible, but also flush with the
new concrete. That meant forming tight, clean edges and ensuring there were no gaps, lips, or irregularities that could cause issues later on.
As we poured and finished the concrete, we used a broom texture that not only looks professional but also adds slip resistance — a key detail for New Jersey’s wet winters and unpredictable spring rains.
With the sidewalk so close to a heavily trafficked road, we staged our work carefully, using cones, barriers, and clear signage to keep pedestrians safe and moving.
The Finished Product: Clean, Compliant, and Long-Lasting
The transformation was clear the moment the forms came off.
Gone were the cracked, uneven slabs — replaced with smooth, continuous concrete that flows naturally around utility covers and matches the surrounding environment. Drainage now works as it should, guiding rainwater away from walking paths instead of letting it pool in low spots.
More importantly, the sidewalk now meets
ADA guidelines.
Running slopes and cross slopes are within acceptable ranges, transitions are flush, and the surface is firm, stable, and slip-resistant. Whether someone is walking their dog or using a wheelchair, they can move confidently and comfortably.
